Introduction
Radcalc is a user-friendly software application that may be used to automate packaging and transportation determination for shipment of radioactive materials. Radcalc has been developed and maintained on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Management, Office of Transporation by Duratek Federal Services (DFS). Radcalc is available free of charge as a public service of the DOE EM Office of Transportation (EM-11).
Currently there are 747 registered Radcalc 4.0 users throughout the DOE Complex as well as at numerous government and commercial organizations including:
- U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
- U.S. Department of Defense
- U.S. Department of Transportation
- National Aeronautics and Space Administration
- State and local regulatory agencies and emergency responders
- International research and regulatory organizations
- Public institutions (e.g., hospitals and universities)
- Commercial entities (e.g., consultants, utilities, and waste management).
Radcalc capabilities include the following:
- Performs transportation classification determinations using the U.S. Department of Transportation definitions and methodologies.
- Performs determinations or calculations in accordance with selected methods prescribed by the DOE, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and International Conference of Radiological Protection.
- Calculates the decay heat and activity of radionuclides and their daughter products at a future date using a radioactive decay algorithm.
- Calculates the radiolytic production of hydrogen gas in a radioactive waste matrix.
